“Camotes” given citations for using exclusive EDSA bus lane

More than 150 motorists popularly known as “camotes” on Thursday received traffic violation tickets for using the EDSA busway lane in Pasay reserved exclusively for public utility buses (PUBS), according to the Department of Transportation.

The term, which applies to motorcycle riders and four-wheel vehicle drivers alike, aims to disparage unsafe and obdurate roadside behavior for those who willingly disregard traffic rules just to get ahead of the other.

In response to a complaint received over the DOTr commuter hotline, the DOTr, the Land Transportation Office, the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board, and the Inter-agency Council for Traffic flagged the motorists and motorcyclists for disregarding traffic signs (DTS) punishable under Republic Act 4136.

The DOTr has repeatedly reminded motorists to respect and obey traffic rules, including the exclusive use of the bus lane.

Only emergency vehicles and government vehicles responding to emergencies are allowed to use the EDSA Busway lane.
