Longer life expectancies, smaller families, and rising healthcare costs are forcing Filipinos to rethink retirement planning, creating demand for financial products that can provide both protection and income well into old age.
AIA Philippines, formerly Philam Life, and BPI AIA, the strategic alliance between AIA Philippines and Bank of the Philippine Islands, have introduced AIA Platinum Secure and BPI AIA ADDvantage, participating whole-life insurance plans that combine lifetime protection with guaranteed income benefits.
The new offerings come as the Philippines moves closer to becoming an aging society. Filipinos aged 60 and above now account for 9.6 percent of the population, a share projected to reach about 11 percent by 2030.
As Filipinos live longer and families become smaller, traditional sources of financial support in retirement could become less dependable, increasing the need for individuals to build their own financial buffers.
AIA Philippines CEO Melita Teo said the products are designed to help Filipinos build financial confidence and resilience as their needs evolve.
Both plans provide guaranteed cash payouts, milestone bonuses, and potential dividends that policyholders can use for retirement, healthcare, or other major expenses.
Policyholders receive guaranteed cash payouts equivalent to 10 percent of the policy’s face amount every other year, starting in the fifth policy year for single-pay and two-pay plans, and the eighth year for five-, 10-, and 20-pay plans.
The plans also provide milestone bonuses equivalent to 25 percent of the face amount at ages 80 and 90, along with a guaranteed maturity benefit at age 100.
Optional riders covering critical illness, hospitalization, accidents, and disability can further expand protection.
The broader shift is significant for insurers. As demographic changes reshape household finances, retirement products are increasingly expected to do more than provide life insurance. They must help policyholders manage longevity risk, healthcare costs, and income needs across a potentially longer retirement.
For AIA Philippines and BPI AIA, the latest offerings seek to position whole-life insurance as a longer-term financial planning tool rather than simply a death benefit, reflecting the changing realities of retirement in the Philippines.
