Puerto Princesa eyes tourism, property investments for growth

Puerto Princesa City is positioning itself for sustained economic growth through major tourism, hospitality and property developments, as investors explore opportunities in Palawan’s expanding visitor economy.

Among the most ambitious proposals is the 500-hectare Sta. Lucia Environmental Estate, designated a Tourism Enterprise Zone by the Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority. With potential investments of up to P200 billion, the project could reshape the city’s tourism landscape, although its broader economic impact will depend on implementation, infrastructure and the extent of local business participation.

Megaworld is also developing Baytown Palawan, a six-hectare mixed-use township along Puerto Princesa South Road. Envisioned as a lifestyle destination comparable to Bonifacio Global City, the project will combine condominiums, commercial establishments and hotels, potentially broadening the city’s residential, retail and accommodation markets.

Suntrust Properties, another Megaworld Group company, is likewise expanding residential and community developments to serve the city’s evolving urban economy.

In the hospitality sector, boutique operator One-Of Collection is reinforcing investor confidence through its Amorita Resort and Spa and The Funny Lion properties, adding to the city’s appeal to travelers seeking more distinctive accommodation experiences.

Together, these developments could generate demand across construction, transport, food services and other supply chains, creating opportunities for local enterprises and workers. However, translating investment commitments into broad-based gains will depend on whether local suppliers can participate and whether infrastructure and environmental safeguards keep pace with development.

Puerto Princesa will present these projects and other opportunities in meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions (MICE), cruise tourism, culinary ventures and ecotourism at its third Investment Forum on October 23 at Conrad Manila.

Spearheaded by Mayor Lucilo Bayron, the forum is expected to bring together 150 investors, business leaders and development partners to explore potential partnerships.

The gathering will test investor appetite for a broader growth strategy that balances property development with tourism diversification, local enterprise participation and the long-term protection of Puerto Princesa’s natural assets.
