NorthPort, International Container Terminal Services Inc.’s (ICTSI) domestic cargo operation at the Port of Manila, has deployed four new hybrid rubber-tired gantry cranes as it upgrades terminal infrastructure to handle cargo more efficiently and reduce emissions.
Manufactured by Mitsui E&S, the cranes are part of NorthPort’s modernization program to strengthen cargo-handling capacity, improve service reliability, and prepare for future volume growth.
Each unit combines a large battery energy storage system with a smaller diesel engine, reducing fuel consumption and carbon emissions compared with conventional equipment. NorthPort estimates that each hybrid crane can cut annual carbon emissions by as much as 58.7 percent relative to a conventional RTG crane.
The equipment investment comes alongside structural improvements at the terminal. NorthPort is strengthening the wharf at Pier 14 and carrying out civil works at Pier 16, with completion targeted by the end of 2027.
The projects are intended to improve the resilience of port infrastructure and support safe, reliable operations as the terminal handles domestic cargo moving through Manila.
NorthPort is a major domestic cargo gateway at the Port of Manila, connecting the capital with other parts of the archipelago through passenger transport, inter-island shipping, and container-handling services.
The crane additions and wharf upgrades reflect the terminal operator’s push to combine equipment modernization with infrastructure improvements. Hybrid technology can reduce emissions and fuel use, while stronger wharves and related civil works help sustain operations over the longer term.
ICTSI, which began operating in the Philippines in 1987, is an independent global terminal operator with more than 30 terminals in nearly 19 countries across six continents. The company works with governments to modernize port facilities and improve operational performance, focusing on terminals serving cargo moving to and from their surrounding markets.
