June WESM rates down 25 percent

The price of electricity sold at the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market (WESM) fell in June, according to the Independent Electricity Market Operator of the Philippines (IEMOP).

The decrease in spot market power rates was traced to lower power demand brought by cooler climes.

As of 25 June, the price per kilowatt hour at the WESM averaged P6.15 or 25.2 percent lower than only P8.22 per kWh in May.

The IEMOP said total demand for the period averaged lower by 6.2 percent to 14,710 megawatts from 15,688 MW as supply proved flat, averaging 19,638 MW from 19,648 MW.

In the same period, electricity in Luzon averaged P5.97 per kWh or 27.9 percent lower than theP8.28 per kWh the IEMOP reported in May. In the Visayas, electricity also sold for less at only P8.56 or 2.9 percent cheaper than the P8.81 per kWh in May.

In Mindanao, electricity cost P4.6 per kWh or 36.6 percent lower than in May when consumers paid P7.26 per kWh.

The figures presented for June are preliminary subject to change depending on the full-month development, the IEMOP said.
