The Sumitomo Mitsui Construction Corporation’s (SMCC) fabrication yard for the Metro Manila Subway already operates at full capacity, producing 90 segments per day equating to 15 tunnel rings, according to the Department of Transportation.
Equipped with 18 sets of mold rings, the MMSP’s fabrication yard in Baliuag is capable of producing at least 1,586 tunnel rings, ensuring a steady supply of segments to support the project’s construction timeline.
The yard, extending over 86,650 square meters, began development on 7 October 2023 and fully operational by 2 September 2024.
“The transportation of fabricated tunnel segments from the Baliuag Yard to the Contract Package 103 (CP103) construction site which houses the Camp Aguinaldo and Anonas stations, is scheduled for December 2024,” DOTr said.
The agency said the start of tunneling works marks a significant milestone in the development of the Metro Manila Subway Project.
The ongoing activities at the Camp Aguinaldo Station and the operational fabrication yard highlight the project’s forward momentum, keeping it on track toward completion within the targeted timelines.
CP103, covering civil works for the Anonas and Camp Aguinaldo stations and viaduct segments, was successfully awarded to Sumitomo Mitsui Construction Corporation Ltd (SMCC) on 27 September 2022.
“Following the commencement of works on 1 May 2023, significant progress has been made on CP103, particularly at the Camp Aguinaldo Station (CAS). Construction at this key station has advanced to the Basement 3 Level (platform level) marking a critical phase in the development of the Metro Manila Subway Project,” the DOTr said.
The Metro Manila Subway project has a route length of 33.1 kilometers from Valenzuela to Paranaque City, a connection to the Ninoy Aquino International Airport and interoperable with the southern Metro Manila and Laguna stations of the North-South Commuter Railway (NSCR).
Once completed, end-to-end travel time from Valenzuela to Pasay City shall be reduced from more than 1.5 hours to only 45 minutes.
