The Manila Electric Company (Meralco) has entered into a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with South Korea’s Samsung C&T Corp. Engineering & Construction Group to explore nuclear energy projects in the Philippines.
The agreement, signed during the Philippines-Korea Business Forum in Manila, aims to boost the country’s energy security.
Under the MOU, the partners collaborate on technical design, regulatory framework, and the necessary grid infrastructure for nuclear technology. This marks Meralco’s second partnership with a South Korean firm for nuclear energy, following a recent agreement with Doosan Enerbility Co. Ltd.
Meralco executive vice president Ronnie Aperocho emphasized the importance of understanding nuclear energy development to ensure informed decision-making in future projects. Meralco chairman Manuel Pangilinan said the collaboration underscores the company’s commitment to integrating nuclear power into the country’s energy supply.
Additionally, Meralco is working with Ultra Safe Nuclear Corp. to develop micro-modular nuclear technology, aiming to establish a power plant by 2028. The Department of Energy also signed a separate MOU with Korea Hydro and Nuclear Power Co. Ltd. to provide guidance on nuclear energy initiatives in the country.
