Globe Telecom, in collaboration with technology partner Asticom, successfully completed the country’s first laser communication system powered by Transcelestial Technologies Pte Ltd. This initiative promises a cost-effective and rapidly deployable alternative to traditional fiber optics, significantly enhancing 4G and 5G coverage, streamlining port operations, and strengthening sectors such as finance and business process outsourcing (BPO).
The trial took place at the Philippine Arena, which hosts up to 55,000 attendees, demonstrating the technology’s capability to provide reliable, high-speed connectivity. Asticom and Transcelestial deployed CENTAURI devices to connect cell sites on wheels (COWs) at key infrastructure points, ensuring robust performance during the event.
Transcelestial’s CENTAURI device, a compact unit about the size of a shoebox, delivers fiber-like connectivity without physical cables, making it ideal for scenarios requiring rapid deployment. It creates an invisible, secure laser communication network between buildings and Globe’s COWs, facilitating seamless data transmission.
“Laser communications hold immense promise for the future of high-speed, reliable connectivity, particularly in areas where deploying physical infrastructure is difficult or impractical,” said Joel Agustin, Globe head of service planning and engineering. “With Transcelestial’s innovation, we are not only enabling faster deployment but also enhancing the overall network experience for our customers.”
Despite facing logistical challenges, the technology demonstrated impressive wireless performance, proving effective for high-demand events.
Marc Kerveillant, general manager for engineering at Asticom, emphasized the company’s pivotal role in implementing this innovative laser technology during the proof-of-concept demonstration in North Luzon. “This project tested the reliability of Transcelestial’s laser tech as a network backhaul, showcasing its potential for seamless, high-performance connectivity,” he said.
The project rigorously assessed CENTAURI as a network backhaul solution, undergoing extensive testing under various real-world conditions. Comprehensive performance metrics and incident reports were meticulously gathered, validating the technology’s efficiency and transformative potential.
Additionally, the tests evaluated the integration of Transcelestial’s laser communication with traditional optical backhaul systems, ensuring uninterrupted service.
Mharicar Castillo-Reyes, president and CEO of Asticom, highlighted the importance of this partnership in advancing innovation and growth for Filipinos. “As their strategic partner for reselling, installation, and services, Asticom will facilitate the implementation of Transcelestial’s cutting-edge technologies across the country, enabling businesses and communities to benefit from enhanced connectivity,” she said.
