Globe Telecom Inc., the telecommunications and financial technology arm of the Ayala Group, said Friday that it has completed the sale of 19 telecom towers to Unity Digital Infrastructure for approximately P228 million.
The transaction is part of a broader sale and leaseback agreement that Globe reached with Unity in May 2023. The deal involves the sale of a total of 447 towers, valued at around P5.4 billion, as part of the company’s efforts to streamline its infrastructure strategy.
With the closing of 19 towers, the total number of completed transactions now cover 326 towers, bringing Globe closer to fully executing the sale.
Unity Digital Infrastructure is a joint venture between Aboitiz InfraCapital and Partners Group, and the deal further consolidates their role in the Philippine telecom tower sector, where infrastructure-sharing models are becoming increasingly common.
The sale is part of Globe’s ongoing efforts to optimize its capital structure by divesting non-core assets and reinvesting in more revenue-generating ventures. By offloading passive infrastructure, Globe is expected to free up resources that can be redirected into enhancing its active network capabilities, such as expanding 5G and fiber infrastructure. The deal is expected to contribute a pre-tax net gain of approximately P1.8 billion, further improving Globe’s balance sheet health.
The move is also in line with industry trends, where telecom companies are increasingly partnering with tower firms to improve operational efficiency and leverage the specialized expertise of tower operators. Globe’s focus remains on enhancing customer experience through faster and more reliable network services while maintaining a strong financial position.
