Globe sets new bar for disaster resilience at APMCDRR 2024

At the Asia-Pacific Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction (APMCDRR) 2024, Globe unveiled an ambitious disaster resilience strategy, positioning technology, infrastructure, and community support as pillars of its approach to disaster risk reduction (DRR) in the Philippines.

The strategy emphasizes sustainable, tech-driven solutions and resilient infrastructure to ensure that Globe’s services remain operational even under extreme weather conditions. This includes disaster-ready towers, backup power sources, and facilities designed to withstand floods, earthquakes, and volcanic eruptions.

A cornerstone of Globe’s approach is its partnership with the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), where it plays a crucial role in delivering geo-tagged emergency alerts to the public via Republic Act 10639, also known as “The Free Mobile Disaster Alerts Act.” In addition, Globe has deployed innovative technologies such as Cell Sites on Wheels (COWs), Towers on Wheels (TOWs), and Emergency Base Stations to restore connectivity in disaster-impacted areas swiftly.

Globe’s community-centric initiatives, like Libreng Tawag (Free Calls) and Libreng Charging (Free Charging), along with telehealth services through KonsultaMD, further demonstrate its commitment to supporting Filipinos during crises. In partnership with Globe Rewards, the company has also enabled users to contribute to disaster relief efforts directly.

At the heart of Globe’s strategy is its commitment to climate action. The company is working toward a net-zero goal, integrating sustainability and risk reduction into its operations to mitigate climate risks. Emmanuel Estrada, Globe’s Chief Strategy Officer, underscored the importance of a multi-channel communication approach, leveraging SMS, cell broadcasts, and social media to ensure emergency alerts reach all citizens.

By incorporating resilience principles into its network design and lifecycle, Globe aims to safeguard critical assets, ensuring that vital communication remains intact during catastrophic events. Through its participation in APMCDRR 2024, Globe reaffirmed its leadership in disaster resilience, setting a new standard for preparedness and response in the Philippines.
