NEA loan program boosts electric cooperatives, supports farmers nationwide

The National Electrification Administration (NEA) has significantly increased its support for electric cooperatives (ECs) withP1.8 billion in loans disbursed in 2024, an 80 percent rise from prior year. The loans, aimed at improving electricity distribution, benefited farmers across the country by enhancing the reliability and reach of power services in rural areas.

According to the NEA, the loans supported 36 ECs in 2024, marking a 29 percent increase from 2023. The majority of the loans—about P1.19 billion, or 66 percent—were earmarked for capital expenditure projects in provinces such as Bataan, Bohol, Bukidnon, and Cebu. The investments are expected to improve electricity infrastructure crucial for agricultural operations, especially in areas dependent on irrigation systems, machinery, and processing facilities that require a steady power supply.

In addition to the capital loans, the NEA also provided working capital loans worth P607 million to 11 ECs, ensuring smooth operations and the continued provision of affordable electricity to farmers in rural regions like Negros Oriental and Ticao Island. Furthermore, a P13.33 million calamity loan was extended to an EC in Bohol to help repair the Janopol mini-hydro power plant, which was damaged by Typhoon Odette. This loan will ensure that the region’s power supply remains stable, particularly for agricultural areas that rely on the plant for energy.

The NEA’s lending program also included loans for renewable energy projects and energy-efficient infrastructure, further supporting sustainable farming practices. As part of its oversight, NEA ensured that the 121 ECs it supervises met operational standards for reliability and efficiency, ultimately helping farmers maintain productive operations with consistent and affordable electricity.

Through its ongoing financial assistance, the NEA continues to foster rural development and agricultural growth, reinforcing the backbone of the nation’s food security.
