BSP chief faces complaint over alleged bank data leak

The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) said Monday it has taken note of reports about a complaint to be filed against BSP Governor Eli Remolona Jr., but noted that he has yet to receive a copy and will respond through the proper legal forum once it is served. The BSP also stressed that central bank and the Anti-Money Laundering Council (AMLC) will continue carrying out their mandates in accordance with the law, guided by independence, professionalism, and due process.

The statement comes as Manases Reyes Carpio, husband of Vice President Sara Duterte, is set to file a complaint before the Quezon City Prosecutor’s Office against several government officials, including Remolona and AMLC Executive Director Ronel Buenaventura, as well as lawmakers such as Gerville Luistro, Percival Cendaña, Chel Diokno, and Leila de Lima.

Carpio alleged that confidential banking records were unlawfully disclosed to the public, in violation of the Anti-Money Laundering Act, bank secrecy laws, and the Data Privacy Act. He claimed the supposed leak involved private financial transactions, including deposits, investments, insurance payments, and utility bills, and argued that such disclosures were used for political harassment and propaganda. He maintained that the law strictly prohibits any release of bank-related reports submitted to the AMLC, warning that unauthorized disclosures could undermine public trust and the security of the country’s financial system.
