AI-powered threats force cybersecurity rethink

Artificial intelligence is rapidly emerging as a major cybersecurity challenge for Philippine enterprises, with experts warning that organizations must overhaul traditional defenses as cybercriminals increasingly deploy AI-driven attacks.

According to Tim Scully, director and principal architect for Government and Critical Industries in Asia-Pacific and Japan at Palo Alto Networks, AI is no longer merely a productivity enhancer but a growing attack surface that requires continuous oversight, governance, and protection.

Scully said AI is fundamentally reshaping the cyber threat landscape by dramatically shortening the time between the discovery of a vulnerability and its exploitation. Attacks that once took days to develop can now be launched within minutes through automation and machine-speed analysis.

“In an AI-driven environment, attackers are moving faster, using automation to identify and weaponize vulnerabilities at machine speed,” Scully said. “This means enterprises must move toward real-time visibility, governance, and AI-aware security controls.”

The warning comes as digital transformation accelerates across the Philippines, with businesses and government agencies increasingly adopting AI-powered tools to improve efficiency and decision-making. While the technology offers significant productivity gains, experts caution that it can also create new security gaps if left unmanaged.

One growing concern is the rise of “shadow AI,” where employees use external AI applications without formal approval or oversight. Such practices can expose sensitive corporate data, create compliance risks, and expand potential entry points for cyber attackers.

To mitigate these threats, Scully advocated a “Secure AI by Design” strategy that embeds cybersecurity safeguards into AI systems from the outset rather than treating security as an afterthought. Key measures include strengthening identity and access controls, continuously monitoring AI usage, and deploying integrated security platforms capable of detecting threats across applications, networks, and workflows.

As AI adoption accelerates, cybersecurity is becoming a strategic business priority rather than simply an IT function.

Resilience for Philippine enterprises will depend on modernizing legacy security infrastructure and deploying AI-enabled defenses capable of keeping pace with increasingly sophisticated and fast-moving cyber threats.
