CREC upcycles old solar panels into school tables in new initiative

Citicore Renewable Energy Corp. (CREC) has launched the EcoLoop program to repurpose end-of-life materials from its operations for community use.

For its first project, the firm teamed up with art and design collective KamayManos PH to turn 20 decommissioned solar panels into 14 durable tables. These will be donated to Pasong Bangkal Elementary School in San Ildefonso, Bulacan—home to one of CREC’s solar plants.

EcoLoop builds on CREC’s earlier EcoShed projects, which previously converted old panels and construction materials into 13 community structures including waiting sheds, outposts, and walkways. Both programs show how renewable energy equipment can serve new purposes instead of being discarded.

CEO Oliver Tan said the initiative reflects the company’s focus on environmental stewardship and innovation, while helping meet local needs. He noted that managing retired solar panels is a growing industry challenge, and such projects benefit both the environment and communities.

CREC currently operates 587 MW of renewable energy capacity nationwide, with plans to expand its solar portfolio to 5,000 MW by 2028 and develop 3,000 MW of wind power over the long term.
