DA orders structural check of GenSan fish port complex

The Department of Agriculture (DA) has mandated a comprehensive structural assessment of the General Santos fish port complex, one of the country’s most important fisheries facilities. This follows a strong earthquake that led to the temporary closure of several areas.

An initial inspection conducted in mid-June found damage that required closing Market Halls 1, 2 and 3, while Market Hall 4 is being used only partially. The new assessment will include geotechnical testing and additional checks due to continuing aftershocks.

Preliminary reports submitted on June 18 indicated that the main structure of the port remains safe and stable. However, officials stated that a detailed evaluation is needed to confirm conditions and plan any necessary repairs.

Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. noted that while initial results are positive, verifying subsurface conditions is urgent to protect workers, traders and everyone dependent on the facility for their livelihoods. No injuries were reported among personnel or stakeholders during the tremor.

Operations have continued through contingency measures, ensuring the steady supply of fish products and exports. As the country is known as the “Tuna Capital,” this port serves as a key hub for the industry and supports supply chains across Mindanao and international markets.

Authorities emphasized that food infrastructure such as ports and storage facilities are critical not only for business but also for national food security. The incident also highlights the growing need to strengthen the resilience of food logistics systems against natural disasters and seismic events, which directly affect the livelihoods of over 200,000 Filipinos linked to the fisheries sector.
