Meralco on standby for power issues amid super typhoon threat

The Manila Electric Company (Meralco) has assured customers its teams are fully prepared to respond to any power outages caused by Super Typhoon Inday (international name Bavi) and the intensified southwest monsoon. The company is closely tracking weather updates from state bureau PAGASA, which has warned of heavy rain and strong to gale-force winds across Meralco’s service area.

“As a 24-hour service provider, our crews stand ready to address any electricity concerns in areas hit by bad weather,” said Meralco vice president and head of corporate communications Joe R. Zaldarriaga. The firm has already rolled out precautionary steps, including public advisories, and is urging billboard operators to temporarily take down their structures to stop them from collapsing in high winds.

Meralco also shared key safety guidance for the public, particularly in flooded areas: turn off the main power switch or circuit breaker only with dry hands and feet, unplug all appliances and turn off fixed devices, and remove light bulbs where possible. After floods recede, clean equipment only while wearing rubber gloves and rubber-soled shoes, confirm all wires and outlets are fully dry before use, and have a licensed electrician check systems before restoring power—never use items damaged by floodwater. Residents are also advised to keep communication devices fully charged and monitor public service radio stations if power cuts occur.
