BSP: Unauthorized reproduction of banknotes illegal, carries 5- 10 year prison term

The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) has issued a reminder to the public that reproducing banknotes without its official permission is against the law.

Under BSP Circular No. 829, Series of 2014, no individual or organization is allowed to print, photocopy, share, or use any picture or exact copy of Philippine currency notes — whether in black and white, full color, or any other color mix — unless they have secured prior approval from the central bank. Those who violate this rule may be sentenced to imprisonment lasting no less than five years and no more than ten years.

The BSP noted that it may grant permission to reproduce banknotes only for specific uses: educational projects, historical references, or numismatic (coin and currency collecting) activities that support the integrity of the national currency. Any approved reproduction must also follow all requirements set out in the circular.
