Telco boosts fight vs. online abuse by blocking NPI

Globe has taken significant steps to combat child sexual abuse by blocking non-photographic imagery (NPI) created through artificial intelligence, CGI, animation, and other non-live methods.

This initiative, which aligns with the company’s #MakeITSafePH campaign, aims to protect children from online exploitation.

In its first month, from August 27 to September 27, Globe successfully blocked 343 URLs and 16 domains identified by the Internet Watch Foundation (IWF). The IWF emphasizes the harmful effects of NPI, stating that even accidental exposure can cause lasting psychological damage.

Anton Bonifacio, Globe chief information security officer, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to creating a safer online environment, highlighting the importance of blocking access to harmful content. Globe has invested over USD2.7 million in advanced content filtering systems, underscoring its dedication to this cause.

In the first half of 2024, Globe blocked 1,718 domains and over 190,000 URLs related to child sexual abuse, while also deactivating 2,726 domains linked to illegal gambling. These efforts are part of compliance with the Anti-Child Pornography Act of 2009, which requires internet service providers to implement measures to prevent the transmission of child pornography.
