SEC-SM tandem launches videos vs scams

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), in partnership with BDO Foundation, has unveiled new investor protection materials aimed at safeguarding the public from financial investment scams.

In a ceremony held earlier this month, the SEC and BDO Foundation launched two educational videos that highlight key warning signs of fraudulent investment schemes. The initiative forms part of the SEC’s broader campaign to protect the investing public through enhanced financial literacy.

“Here at the SEC, it has always been our goal to ensure the protection of the investing public from fraudulent activities,” SEC chairman Emilio B. Aquino said during the launch. “We have seen the detrimental effects of these illicit activities not only on an individual level but, more importantly, on a societal level. But we know that the SEC cannot do everything on its own. This is why we are thankful that we have the likes of BDO Foundation as our partners in promoting investor education among the public.”

The newly released videos will be integrated into various programs, training sessions, and seminars conducted by both the SEC and BDO Foundation. They are also available on the SEC’s official social media platforms.

The project stems from an ongoing collaboration between the two organizations under the SEC Capital Markets Promotion and Awareness Inter-Agency Network (SEC CAMPAIGN Network), established in 2023. The campaign is a key component of the SEC Communication, Advocacy, and Network (SEC CAN!) initiative—its flagship investor education program aimed at expanding the reach of financial education through partnerships with both public and private sector stakeholders.

BDO Foundation president Mario A. Derequito underscored the importance of financial literacy and investor protection in their advocacy. “One of BDO Foundation’s core programs is financial education,” he said. “We believe Filipinos should be given the opportunity to acquire the needed knowledge, skills, values, and tools to manage their personal resources. Investor protection is an important aspect of financial education, and through this initiative, we aim to serve sectors such as teachers, OFWs and their families, civil servants, and MSMEs—groups that are also part of the SEC’s target audience.”

The joint effort seeks to empower more Filipinos to make informed financial decisions and avoid falling prey to fraudulent schemes.
