The Department of Transportation (DOTr), through the Land Transportation Office (LTO), has revoked the driver’s license of Mark Louie A. Burgos, an ELS Bus Co. driver caught on video over-speeding en route to La Union, as part of a broader regulatory crackdown on unsafe and undisciplined drivers.
Transportation secretary Vince Dizon confirmed the revocation on Wednesday, citing Burgos’s involvement in two road incidents in La Union. “There will be more of these undisciplined drivers who will be losing their privilege to drive,” Dizon said at a press briefing, emphasizing President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s directive to prioritize commuter safety.
In addition to Burgos’s case, Dizon announced the suspension of 671 driver’s licenses over the Holy Week period. Of these, 574 were involved in traffic incidents causing injuries or fatalities, while 97 were public utility vehicle (PUV) drivers who tested positive for illegal drugs, based on Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) findings.
“We are sending a strong message,” said Dizon. “Especially to operators of buses, jeepneys, and other PUVs — we will not tolerate this.”
To further tighten regulations, the DOTr is forming a joint task force with the LTO and the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) to conduct a comprehensive review of road safety protocols and the driver licensing system. Dizon highlighted the need for stricter assessments, particularly for motorcycle drivers, citing widespread violations and inadequate vetting.
“This isn’t just for Holy Week,” Dizon warned. “If you’re still thinking of abusing the rules, be prepared to lose your license and face legal consequences.”
The move signals the Marcos administration’s intent to reform the country’s transportation safety standards and enforce stricter accountability across the sector.
