Young Filipinos focus on health-span over lifespan – survey

A recent study by The Manufacturers Life Insurance Co. (Phils.) Inc. highlights that millennials and Gen Z in the Philippines are increasingly prioritizing health, purpose, and financial independence. The study, titled #FYP: Future-proofing Young Pinoys, surveyed 500 young Filipinos and revealed that while 83 percent are knowledgeable about health and wellness, only 76 percent are actively maintaining healthy habits.

The research underscores a strong desire among these generations to avoid illness, with 64 percent aiming for better health to prevent sickness and 44 percent to minimize medical costs. Many are also focused on self-image, with 44 percent seeking to look fit and 43 percent desiring a youthful appearance. Interestingly, 60 percent of women and 53 percent of men prefer to prolong their health-spans over their lifespans.

Despite this motivation, the study identifies barriers like stress, excessive screen time, and sleep deprivation that hinder consistent wellness practices. Manulife’s CEO Rahul Hora emphasized the need to support these generations in bridging the gap between intentions and actions, through health programs that integrate wellness into daily routines.

The study also found that 96 percent of respondents view aging positively, with 91 percent prioritizing a meaningful life over a long one. Notably, 83 percent believe living independently and pursuing what matters most is more important than being illness-free.
