Century Pacific thrives by weathering every storm

Century Pacific Food Inc. continues to navigate inflationary pressures and shifting consumer behavior while maintaining steady growth, reinforcing its reputation as an “all-weather company.” 

The Philippine food giant combines portfolio diversification, disciplined cost management, and strategic pricing to outperform during economic turbulence.

Speaking at the ASEAN Business Media Exchange, executive vice president and chief operating officer Gregory Banzon highlighted the country’s consumption-driven economy as a key growth driver. “About 75 percent of the Philippine economy is consumption-led, and a large portion of that is food,” he said, noting the advantage of locally produced staples.

Rising costs and inflation present a challenge. Century Pacific has avoided aggressive price hikes, opting for measured increases and operational efficiencies such as streamlining processes and reducing non-essential spending. The strategy aims to keep products affordable while preserving margins.

The company’s resilience is supported by a diversified portfolio spanning seafood, canned meat, dairy, and multiple income segments. By offering brands across low, middle, and high-income consumers and multiple retail channels, Century Pacific can pivot as consumer preferences shift. 

“We normally do well during good times, but we tend to outperform during crisis periods,” Banzon said, emphasizing the company’s ability to thrive in volatile conditions.

Consumer behavior is also evolving. During crises, shoppers increasingly favor smaller, more frequent purchases and neighborhood stores over large supermarkets. Similar trends were observed during COVID-19, the Russia-Ukraine conflict, and other geopolitical tensions.

For Century Pacific, these shifts are opportunities rather than risks. The company leverages them to deepen market reach and reinforce its role as a staple in Filipino households. Its strategy demonstrates that disciplined cost management, calibrated pricing, and portfolio flexibility can turn economic volatility into a competitive advantage.
