Data from the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) in June shows that Aboitiz Equity Ventures Inc. (AEV) holding the largest share of the power generation market at 24.30 percent, equivalent to 6.85 million kilowatts.
Across regional grids, AEV recorded a 27.53 percent share in Luzon (5.62 million kW), 16.99 percent in Visayas (591,105 kW), and 14.85 percent in Mindanao (637,929 kW).
Ranking second is San Miguel Corp. (SMC) with a national share of 19.62 percent (5.53 million kW). SMC leads in Luzon with 24.67 percent (5.04 million kW), while posting 4.18 percent in Visayas and 8.12 percent in Mindanao.
Third place went to First Gen Corp. with 10.74 percent (3.03 million kW) nationally. ACEN Corp., the renewable energy arm of Ayala Corp., followed at 6.91 percent (1.95 million kW), holding 8.69 percent in Luzon and 5.01 percent in Visayas but has no capacity in Mindanao. Meralco PowerGen Corp. (MGen) completed the top five with 6.70 percent national share, with its highest share at 15.93 percent in Visayas.
In 2026, the ERC set market share limits to ensure fair competition. Under regulations, no single entity may own more than 25 percent of the national generating capacity or 30 percent of capacity in any individual grid. The national limit is set at 7.05 million kW, while regional caps are placed on Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao grids respectively.
ERC chairman and CEO Francis Saturnino Juan stated that these measures aim to prevent market dominance, support reliable power supply, and protect consumers from high prices. He added that updated data also supports industry planning as the sector expands with more renewable energy and new technologies.
