Toyota Motor Philippines (TMP) and its nationwide dealer network have pledged to strengthen compliance with the Philippine Competition Act, reinforcing consumer protection standards as the country’s largest automaker works with the Philippine Competition Commission (PCC) to promote fairer market practices.
The commitment, formalized through a Statement of Commitment following a PCC compliance briefing, outlines measures aimed at improving transparency and ensuring customers have greater freedom in purchasing vehicles and related services.
As part of the undertaking, TMP committed to discourage practices that could raise competition concerns, including forced in-house financing, excessive insurance or accessory charges, bundling of additional vehicle units, and selling vehicles above the manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP).
The company also pledged to implement reasonably non-discriminatory rebate programs across its dealer network in line with competition rules.
“We undertook commitments with PCC to strengthen our compliance for fair competition being the market leader,” said Josephine Villanueva, TMP first vice president for corporate affairs.
While maintaining that its financing, discount and rebate programs comply with existing laws, TMP acknowledged that some business practices could be perceived as raising competition issues. The company clarified that its commitments do not constitute an admission of liability but reflect its commitment to stronger compliance and consumer confidence.
The automaker also committed to provide buyers with clearer information on vehicle prices, financing options, delivery schedules, insurance packages and accessories before purchase, allowing customers to make more informed decisions. Dealers will likewise be expected to document that buyers were properly informed of available options and to avoid misleading or unfair sales practices.
TMP also pledged to strengthen mechanisms for addressing customer concerns while ensuring compliance with the Philippine Competition Act and other consumer protection regulations.
The initiative forms part of the PCC’s broader competition advocacy campaign aimed at encouraging businesses to adopt voluntary compliance measures that promote transparency, fair competition and consumer welfare across industries.
