Airline fuel surcharge unchanged a third time in May

The Civil Aeronautics Board (CAB) on Thursday announced a stay in the passenger and cargo fuel surcharge in May, the third such stay thus far this year.

In an advisory, the CAB said passenger and cargo fuel surcharge for domestic and international flights remain at Level 6 from May 1 to May 31, unchanged from April.

Under Level 6 of the passenger fuel surcharge matrix, airlines are allowed to collect a fuel surcharge ranging from P185 to P665 on domestic flights and from P610.37 to P4,538.40 on international flights.

As for cargo fuel surcharge, the CAB said airlines are allowed to charge from a range of P0.95 to P2.78 per kilogram on domestic flights under Level 6 and from P3.14 to P23.33 per kilogram on international flights.

“Airlines wishing to impose or collect fuel surcharge must file its application with the CAB on or before the effectivity period, with fuel surcharge rates not exceeding the above-stated level,” CAB said.

The CAB said the airline fuel surcharge is an optional fee, imposed and collected by airlines to recover fuel costs and help prevent losses caused by upward spikes in fuel cost.

It stressed thefuel surcharge is not a part of the basic airfare and may be reduced or removed depending on the price of jet fuel in the market.

According to the International Air Transport Association’s (IATA) Jet Fuel price Monitor, the average jet fuel price average USD111.01 per barrel as of 12 April this year, up 3.2 percent percent compared to last month and lower by 1.2 percent compared to the same period last year.
