The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) on Wednesday said the Philippines was elected as host country of the Board of the Fund meeting as response to loss and damage due to climate change.
The country’s bid won over seven others at the ongoing second meeting of the board in South Korea.
As the host of the Board of the Fund, the Philippines will continue to contribute to the fast and seamless operationalization of the Loss and Damage Fund (LDF) by ensuring that meetings are successfully held and supported.
The LDF assists vulnerable developing countries to the adverse effects of climate change in responding to economic and non-economic loss and damage associated with the adverse effects of climate change, including extreme weather and slow onset events.
The Board of the Fund is a 26-member body from Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention Climate Change and the Paris Agreement. Twelve members come from developed countries and another 14 from developing countries.
As a member of the board, the Philippines occupies one of three seats for Asia-Pacific States.
“This is a welcome development for the Philippines as one of the countries most vulnerable to the adverse effects of climate change. The LDF is a long-fought struggle to directly assist those who bear the greatest impact of climate-induced losses and damage to recover and build. We take on this responsibility in solidarity with all countries vulnerable to the impacts of climate change,” said DENR Secretary Maria Antonia Yulo Loyzaga, in a statement.
