The Department of Transportation (DOTr) on Friday announced that 90 percent of the 45-second timers at EDSA Busway stations are now fully operational, a significant step towards improving bus flow and reducing traffic congestion.
“I am happy to report that 90 percent of the 45-second timers at EDSA Busway stops are now operational,” said Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon.
The timers, designed to regulate bus drivers’ layover times at bus stops, are part of an initiative to minimize delays and prevent buses from causing traffic backups. To ensure compliance, Special Action and Intelligence Committee for Transportation (SAICT) enforcers have been stationed at both north and southbound stations.
“Our enforcers, two of them, are stationed at each bus stop both north and southbound,” Dizon explained. “They are responsible for reminding bus drivers that they should only be operational for 45 seconds, ensuring we avoid traffic jams.”
Dizon expressed optimism that the presence of both timers and enforcers will help bus drivers adapt to the new regulations, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a smooth bus flow for the benefit of all commuters.
“Now, the good thing with the timers and enforcers in place, they [bus drivers] will probably get used to it. We call on our bus drivers to follow this rule so that the flow of buses on the busway can continue,” he added.
Additionally, the DOTr is fast-tracking the repair of the remaining station timers to complete the improvements to the signaling system and enhance the overall efficiency and safety of the EDSA Busway.
Dizon also highlighted ongoing efforts to ensure accessibility for Persons with Disabilities (PWD), including repairs to the steep ramp at the Philam Station and the ongoing renovation of its elevator.
“The elevator at the said station is also being repaired to make it more comfortable for our PWD commuters,” Dizon said.
These upgrades are part of a broader effort to enhance the commuter experience and ensure smoother operations on the EDSA Busway.
