The Department of Agriculture (DA) has started distributing a ₱10-billion cash assistance program to help farmers and fisherfolk cope with rising fuel and production costs.
Under the Presidential Assistance for Farmers and Fisherfolk Program (PAFFP), more than 4.17 million beneficiaries will each receive ₱2,325. The program is funded through the 2026 national budget and targets small rice farmers (2 hectares and below), as well as registered corn and sugarcane farmers and municipal fisherfolk.
The aid aims to ease the impact of high fuel prices, which increase the cost of running farm equipment, irrigation, and fishing boats. Officials say the cash support is meant to provide quick relief and help maintain food production.
Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. said the assistance is limited but serves as a “lifeline” for affected workers.
Initial payouts begin this week in Regions I, II, III, VI, and IX, with more areas to follow. The government is still finalizing beneficiary lists and distribution systems.
While the program offers short-term help, officials note it does not solve deeper issues like high input costs, limited financing, and climate risks. Its overall impact will depend on effective implementation and additional long-term support measures.
