Philippines pushes ASEAN unity, targets concrete gains

The Philippines is calling for deeper integration within the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), warning that stronger regional coordination is now essential as global uncertainties intensify.

Speaking at a press conference in Cebu City ahead of the 48th ASEAN Summit, Department of Trade and Industry Undersecretary Allan Gepty said rising geopolitical tensions—including the ongoing Middle East crisis—have exposed the limits of purely national responses.

“The current crisis underscores the need to deepen cooperation. National responses alone are not sufficient,” Gepty said, emphasizing the urgency of tighter coordination in energy and food security, logistics, and supply chains. “A more integrated ASEAN is not just an aspiration; it is a necessity.”

Gepty noted that ASEAN’s decades-long integration has already produced tangible gains for member states, including the Philippines—from expanded market access to stronger participation of micro, small, and medium enterprises in regional value chains.

“These are not abstract ideas. These are everyday advantages that come from our regional cooperation,” he said.

As a founding member, the Philippines continues to help shape ASEAN’s evolution as a global hub for manufacturing, investment, and innovation.

Gepty added that the bloc plays a stabilizing role during crises by helping sustain trade flows and maintain investor confidence.

He also pointed to Cebu’s growing importance as a strategic logistics hub supporting regional connectivity.

He said the Philippines will push for concrete deliverables during its ASEAN chairship, including advancing the ASEAN Power Grid, strengthening resilient agriculture, expanding digital trade frameworks, attracting green investments, and broadening trade partnerships—particularly with Canada.
