A new large-scale coconut processing facility by Thailand-based Thai World Group is set to bolster the Philippines’ role as a major global supplier of value-added coconut products, while generating employment and investment in Northern Mindanao.
Department of Trade and Industry Secretary Cristina Roque announced on Wednesday that PhilCo Food Processing, Inc., a subsidiary of Thai World Group, will inaugurate its PHP1-billion plant this June inside the Phividec Industrial Estate in Tagoloan, Misamis Oriental.
The facility spans 5.5 hectares and underscores growing international confidence in the Philippines as a strategic manufacturing and sourcing hub for coconut products.
Once operational, the plant is expected to employ around 1,500 Filipinos and process more than 500,000 coconuts daily for export to Thailand, Europe, and the United States, according to the Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA).
Industry experts said the project could create significant ripple effects across the local coconut sector. Higher demand for raw coconuts may benefit farmers and suppliers, while further investments in logistics, packaging, and food manufacturing in Mindanao could follow.
“The plant is a testament to the Philippines’ growing participation in the international coconut value chain,” Roque said. “It not only strengthens export capacity but also showcases the country as a competitive player in global coconut markets, especially amid rising demand for coconut-based food and wellness products.”
Officials expect the facility to enhance the country’s export processing capabilities, supporting the broader goal of adding value to Philippine agricultural commodities while generating employment and stimulating economic growth in the region.
With Thailand’s investment, the Philippines moves closer to becoming a regional hub for high-value coconut production, strengthening both local industry resilience and its global trade footprint.
