Ayala expands Japan partnerships for AI, fintech

The Ayala Corp. on Wednesday signed memoranda of understanding (MOUs) with leading Japanese firms Mitsubishi Corp., MUFG Bank, and KDDI Corp. in Tokyo to strengthen cooperation in smart cities, digital finance, marketing technology, and artificial intelligence-driven infrastructure, according to the Presidential Communications Office (PCO).

The agreements reflect deepening Philippine-Japan business ties in emerging digital and sustainable industries, while reinforcing the Philippines’ growing role as a regional hub for digital innovation, financial technology, and smart urban development.

According to the PCO, the partnerships are expected to unlock opportunities for innovation-led growth, financial inclusion, and the development of smarter and more connected communities, underscoring continued Japanese investor confidence in the Philippine economy.

The signing ceremony was witnessed by Ferdinand Marcos Jr. during his State Visit to Japan, signaling sustained high-level support for expanding economic and technology cooperation between Manila and Tokyo.

Based on Ayala Group disclosures, Mitsubishi Corp. has been a strategic partner since 1974, with collaborations spanning several industries.

In digital finance, Mitsubishi acquired a 50 percent stake in AC Ventures, a wholly owned Ayala subsidiary, to invest in Mynt, operator of the GCash platform. The partnership supports efforts to expand the mobile wallet’s services locally and internationally, including within Japan’s digital ecosystem.

Beyond fintech, Ayala and Mitsubishi also maintain joint ventures in renewable energy, water utilities, industrial estates, and automotive dealerships, highlighting a long-standing diversified partnership.

Meanwhile, MUFG Bank, Japan’s largest banking group, holds an 8 percent stake in Mynt and has partnered with Ayala on multi-billion-peso sustainability-linked credit facilities supporting green and social development initiatives.

KDDI and Ayala likewise continue to collaborate on a range of digital, enterprise, and telecommunications initiatives in the Philippines.
