DHL eyes Clark growth as Luzon Corridor gains

DHL Group is keeping a close watch on Clark’s emergence as a logistics and investment hub, signaling interest in future expansion opportunities while stopping short of committing to a new gateway facility as the government’s Luzon Economic Corridor strategy gathers momentum.

Roderick Queppet, DHL Express Philippines vice president for commercial, said the global logistics firm is continuously evaluating where future investments could generate the greatest returns, particularly as economic activity expands beyond Metro Manila.

For now, however, DHL believes its existing gateways in Manila and Cebu remain sufficient to support current operations.

“The way we look at our operations, it depends on where the opportunity lies. At the moment, these two gateways serve our objectives. They’re sufficient,” Queppet said.

Still, Clark is firmly on the company’s radar.

DHL already operates a service center within the Clark Development Corporation zone and is expanding its presence there as part of a broader effort to strengthen coverage across northern Luzon.

The company also maintains operations in Subic, positioning itself within a corridor increasingly being promoted as the country’s next major growth engine.

Queppet said DHL is carefully assessing whether the rapid influx of investments into Clark could eventually justify larger logistics infrastructure.

“Clark, yes, there is an effort there, but we’re still assessing at the moment,” he said.

The cautious stance reflects a broader industry reality. Logistics providers often move in tandem with manufacturing, exports, and industrial investments, preferring to expand capacity only when cargo volumes reach sustainable levels.

The government’s Luzon Economic Corridor initiative, backed by infrastructure upgrades and investment promotion efforts, aims to transform Clark, Subic, Manila, and surrounding areas into a more integrated economic zone capable of attracting higher-value industries.

For DHL, that creates both opportunity and a waiting game.

“We are not ignoring the fact that investments are also happening in that location,” Queppet said. “We’re carefully looking at what investment we can put on in the future.”

While no major expansion announcement appears imminent, DHL’s continued upgrades in Clark suggest the logistics giant is positioning itself for a future in which northern Luzon could become an increasingly important gateway for trade, manufacturing, and cross-border commerce.
