450 PH cities get fiber-optic upgrade

Globe Telecom Inc. has successfully upgraded 450 cities and towns across the Philippines to fiber-optic technology, enhancing connectivity for its wireline customers. The initiative replaces outdated copper cables with fiber in at least 60 provinces, meeting the rising demand for reliable broadband services.

Abigail Cardino, Globe vice president for broadband business, emphasized the importance of this transformation for customer service and environmental sustainability. “This transformation enables us to better serve the growing digital needs of our customers while reducing energy consumption and environmental impact,” she said. Fiber-optic technology, with its lower carbon footprint, allows for faster data transmission over longer distances while consuming less energy.

The shift also aims to mitigate the risks associated with copper theft, which has led to frequent service interruptions. Unlike copper, fiber cables lack scrap value, reducing the incentive for theft. Under Republic Act 10515, those caught stealing cable lines face penalties of up to five years in prison and fines of up to P100,000.

Globe encourages the public to report cable theft incidents to local authorities to further protect its infrastructure.
