In a major step toward advancing financial inclusion and literacy among Filipino youth, over 500 students from Southern Leyte State University (SLSU) opened their first bank accounts under the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP)-led Youth Financial Inclusion (YFI) Initiative.
Spearheaded by the BSP through the Financial Inclusion Steering Committee (FISC), the YFI campaign promotes financial health by introducing young Filipinos to formal financial systems, starting with basic transaction accounts. These accounts are seen as entry points to a broader range of financial services.
The Southern Leyte campaign marks a milestone as the first peer-driven rollout of YFI in the region, led by YFI Ambassadors—student leaders trained to promote financial literacy and inclusion through local initiatives. More than 1,100 students participated in the onboarding activity during SLSU’s General Student Assembly.
BSP representatives also conducted financial education sessions, emphasizing the long-term benefits of financial inclusion. The initiative is backed by key FISC member agencies, including the Department of Finance, Department of Information and Communications Technology, and the National Youth Commission, with support from the Presidential Communications Office.
