Batu Ampar Port to get single operator in 2025 as modernization push speeds up

Batu Ampar Container Terminal (BACT) and Batam Terminal Petikemas (BTP), together with Interport Mandiri Utama, will take over as the single operator of the North Pier at Batu Ampar Port beginning December this year. The move is part of a major effort to modernize operations and boost Batam’s position as a regional logistics hub.

Benny Syahroni, BP Batam’s port management director, said the unified structure will support Batu Ampar’s transformation into a “modern and competitive international port.”

The North Pier is already equipped for high-volume cargo handling. It has the capacity to manage 900,000 TEUs annually, features a 1,032-meter berth, and includes five quay cranes, 12 rubber-tired gantries, and 10 electric terminal trucks—with the truck fleet expected to grow to 25.

BACT CEO Hsin Kai Huang said the company is committed not only to upgrading infrastructure and equipment but also to building a skilled local workforce that meets ICTSI’s global standards.

The single-operator model is expected to improve efficiency, cut vessel turnaround times, and raise service reliability. Stronger port performance is also projected to attract more investment, support Batam’s industrial growth, and drive wider economic benefits.

BACT is Batam’s exclusive international container terminal, strategically located near 30 industrial parks and just 27 kilometers from Singapore, giving it direct access to the busy Malacca and Singapore straits.
