PLDT, Smart step up fight vs cable theft with barangay partnerships

PLDT Inc. and its wireless unit Smart Communications are strengthening efforts to stop cable and equipment theft by working more closely with barangays, local governments, police, and communities across the country.

Through their Asset Protection and Security Risk Governance Group, the companies expanded their barangay-based asset protection program, Bayanihan, in 2025. Sessions were held in several areas, including Makati, Quezon City, Davao City, Cagayan de Oro, Pasay, Calamba, General Santos, and other cities and towns.

PLDT and Smart said involving communities is key to protecting their network. Company officials stressed that safeguarding cables and equipment helps ensure uninterrupted internet and mobile services for households, businesses, and institutions.

Security officials also noted that cooperation with barangays and local authorities allows faster reporting and response to theft incidents, helping prevent larger service disruptions and encouraging shared responsibility in protecting telecom infrastructure.

The initiative is part of PLDT’s wider response to ongoing theft and vandalism. In 2024, the company recorded nearly 1,000 theft-related incidents, mostly involving copper cables, with some areas in Manila experiencing theft as often as every three days.

Beyond material losses, these incidents disrupt services and affect customers. The program aims to deter theft and vandalism while equipping residents with knowledge to help protect their communities.

PLDT reported improvements from its asset protection efforts, with a 34 percent drop in apprehension incidents and a 24 percent decrease in apprehended suspects from January to November 2025 compared with the same period last year.
