Masato Kanda, president of the Asian Development Bank, announced he will run for reelection when his current term ends on November 23, 2026.
Kanda said he hopes to continue leading the bank for another five years to help Asia and the Pacific deal with major challenges and support long-term development.
ADB presidents are chosen by the bank’s Board of Governors for five-year terms. Kanda took office in February 2025 after being elected in November 2024, completing the term of former president Masatsugu Asakawa.
Under Kanda’s leadership, ADB increased its funding in 2025, committing $29.3 billion—20% more than the previous year. With partner contributions, total development financing reached $44 billion. The bank also launched major regional programs, including funding for energy connectivity and economic cooperation projects, and continued support for food systems and regional initiatives.
ADB responded to global and regional crises by providing emergency assistance to several countries, including the Philippines and others affected by conflict and disasters.
The bank also introduced reforms, such as supporting nuclear energy for the first time, updating its environmental and procurement policies, and expanding its operations capacity.
Founded in 1966, ADB is a multilateral development bank owned by 69 members and focuses on promoting sustainable and inclusive growth across Asia and the Pacific.
