SM Hotels and Conventions Corp. (SMHCC) is expanding its social impact beyond hotel operations by equipping Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDLs) with hospitality skills that could help them secure jobs and rebuild their lives after release.
Through Park Inn by Radisson North EDSA, the company has launched a Basic Food and Beverage Operations Training Program in partnership with the Quezon City Jail Male Dormitory, giving PDLs hands-on training designed to prepare them for careers in the hospitality industry.
The program was formally launched at the Quezon City Jail Male Dormitory with officials from the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology, the Quezon City government, SMHCC and Radisson Hotel Group, highlighting the growing role of public-private partnerships in workforce development and rehabilitation.
Quezon City Mayor Ma. Josefina Belmonte underscored the value of creating second chances through education and employment, while a ceremonial ribbon-cutting marked the start of the training program.
“At SM Hotels and Conventions Corporation, we believe hospitality has the power to uplift lives beyond the walls of our hotels,” said SMHCC Executive Vice President Peggy Angeles. She said the initiative aims to equip participants with practical skills, renewed confidence and better opportunities for a fresh start.
Park Inn by Radisson North EDSA General Manager Reycie Gutierrez said the training program reflects the company’s commitment to responsible hospitality by creating opportunities that benefit not only guests but also communities.
Beyond addressing manpower needs in the tourism sector, the initiative demonstrates how the hospitality industry can contribute to social inclusion by preparing individuals for productive employment after incarceration. As the sector continues to recover and expand, programs that develop job-ready workers while promoting rehabilitation could become an increasingly important part of building a more inclusive workforce.
