Digital banking has become a seamless part of daily life for millions of Filipinos, from quick money transfers before work to settling bills from a smartphone at night. To mark Cybersecurity Awareness Month, EastWest is encouraging consumers to make safety a natural part of their daily financial routine.
Bank officials stress that protecting your money does not require complex steps. Simple habits, such as taking a few seconds to pause and check transaction details before sending money, can significantly cut the risk of online fraud.
Essential Habits for Safe Online Banking
Consumers can protect their accounts by practicing a few fundamental habits during their day-to-day transactions. First, users should always pause to double-check recipient details and payment amounts before tapping confirm. Keeping credentials secure is equally vital, which means never sharing passwords, One-Time Passwords (OTPs), card numbers, or CVVs with anyone, even callers claiming to represent the bank. Additionally, consumers should avoid clicking on suspicious links sent via text or email, transact exclusively through official channels, monitor account statements regularly to spot unrecognized charges early, and keep their smartphone software updated.
Digital Tools for Extra Account Protection
EastWest complements these individual habits with built-in security features through its digital banking platform, EasyWay. Account entry and transfers are secured using biometric login methods, such as fingerprint or face recognition, alongside OTP verification.
For added control over funds, principal credit cardholders can temporarily lock their cards through the app to block new purchases if a card is misplaced. Customers looking to protect their savings can use the EasyLock feature to set aside a portion of their balance that cannot be spent online until manually unlocked. For urgent security concerns, the Emergency Shield tool allows users to immediately suspend digital account access if fraud is suspected. The platform also enforces a 24-hour transaction pause whenever sensitive account information, such as a registered phone number or device, is updated.
Why Online Banking Safety Matters
The push for better cyber habits comes as digital finance grows rapidly across the country. Data from the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) shows that digital payments made up 52.8% of all retail transactions in the Philippines in 2023, up from 42.1% in 2022 and just 1% a decade ago.
“Digital banking should make everyday financial tasks easier, but convenience and security must go hand in hand,” said EastWest CEO Jerry Ngo. “As more customers choose to bank digitally, we continue to invest in safeguards that help protect them while keeping banking simple and accessible.”
Bank officials remind the public that cybersecurity is an ongoing practice rather than a reaction to problems. By combining simple personal caution with built-in app security features, consumers can safely navigate their day-to-day digital finances.
