The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) has signed an administrative order requiring mining companies to integrate the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals (UN-SDGs) into their Social Development and Management Programs (SDMPs).
The mandate aims to address environmental challenges such as biodiversity conservation, climate action, and ecosystem restoration, while promoting labor equity and community empowerment. DENR Secretary Maria Antonia Yulo Loyzaga emphasized the importance of sustainable practices in the mining industry, aligning with President Marcos Jr.’s call for responsible resource use.
Mining companies will be required to allocate 1.5 percent of their operating expenses to SDMPs, which fund local development projects such as infrastructure, education, and healthcare. The new directive aims to ensure that mineral wealth benefits both ecosystems and host communities while contributing to the global agenda for sustainability.
Industry representatives, including the Chamber of Mines of the Philippines, have expressed support, highlighting their commitment to green technologies and sustainable mining practices.
