The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) has confirmed that Boracay Water successfully established and maintained its 20-hectare watershed rehabilitation site in Sitio Mananga, Barangay Nabaoy, Malay, Aklan.
The validation was conducted in February by DENR’s provincial environment office following an inspection of the area, which was adopted by Boracay Water in 2020. The agency reported that the plantation is now fully developed and well maintained.
The site includes 35,527 trees planted from 2020 to 2024, using native species such as Narra, Lawaan, and others. DENR also recommended the release of remaining payments to the Nabaoy Farmers and Forest Developers Association (NAFFDA), which helped implement and maintain the project.
The watershed work is part of Boracay Water’s sustainability program, “Boracay Highland to Ocean (H2O),” which supports the “PUNOan ang PalaTUBIGan” initiative. The program aims to protect the Nabaoy Watershed, the main source of clean water for Boracay Island, through a five-year agreement with partners including the DENR, LGU of Malay, Barangay Nabaoy, and NAFFDA.
Aside from tree planting, the project also provided livelihood support for local farmers involved in monitoring and maintenance. It was funded with about ₱2.1 million from Boracay Water.
The company also continues river protection efforts to maintain water quality standards, along with coastal cleanups and environmental awareness activities in the community.
Following the DENR validation, Boracay Water announced plans to expand its efforts by adopting another 20-hectare area in the same watershed, continuing its partnership with government agencies and local groups.
Boracay Water is under Manila Water Philippine Ventures, part of Manila Water Philippine Ventures, and operates as a concessionaire of the Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority.
