VinFast looks at battery subscriptions to drive sales

Vietnamese electric vehicle maker VinFast is introducing a new ownership model in the Philippines, betting that battery subscriptions can make electric motorcycles more affordable and attractive to cost-conscious commuters, delivery riders, and ride-hailing operators.

As the company opens early bookings for its first e-motorcycle lineup, VinFast is highlighting its battery-as-a-service program as a key differentiator in a market where upfront cost remains one of the biggest barriers to electric vehicle adoption.

According to VinFast Philippines Regional Sales Manager for Motorcycles Andrae Baltazar, the subscription model is tailored for daily transport providers who value flexibility and minimal downtime.

“Targeting daily commuters like ride-hailing users, the battery subscription allows for both battery swapping and home charging, while ownership allows only home charging,” Baltazar said.

Under the scheme, the VinFast EVO costs about P70,000 upfront, significantly lower than the roughly ap84,000 purchase price for a unit with an owned battery. Subscribers then pay a monthly fee of P439 for a one-battery setup or P870 for two batteries.

The strategy mirrors a growing trend in electric mobility markets, where manufacturers separate battery ownership from vehicle ownership to lower acquisition costs and ease concerns about battery lifespan and replacement expenses.

VinFast is also emphasizing operating savings. While a gasoline-powered motorcycle may consume about ₱80 worth of fuel for 40 kilometers of travel, the company estimates a full electric charge costs around ₱40 and can deliver a range of up to 80 kilometers.

For users requiring continuous mobility, battery-swapping stations offer an additional advantage. Home charging takes four to five hours, but swapping a depleted battery for a fully charged one can be completed in seconds.

The company offers three models in the Philippines—the EVO, Feliz II, and Viper—with configurations that accommodate one or two batteries depending on riding requirements.

Early demand appears encouraging. VinFast said the EVO has emerged as the most popular model among initial buyers, suggesting strong interest in affordable electric mobility solutions.

As fuel costs remain volatile and urban commuters search for cheaper transport options, VinFast is betting that Filipinos may be ready to subscribe to their batteries—even if they still prefer owning the motorcycle itself.
