PH, Denmark launch project to modernize offshore fishing industry

The Department of Agriculture (DA) has partnered with Denmark to introduce a pilot project aimed at modernizing the Philippines’ offshore fishing sector. Signed through the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) and the Danish Fishing Technology Cluster, this cooperation marks a new milestone as both countries celebrate 80 years of diplomatic relations.

The project brings in advanced Danish midwater trawl technology to enhance fish production and apply scientific management. It focuses on sustainable harvesting methods that reduce bycatch, protect marine habitats, improve fuel efficiency, and lower carbon emissions. The initiative builds on an agreement first signed in 2019, following years of technical discussions between both parties.

Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. stated that the program aims to maximize the potential of the country’s fisheries resources. It seeks to boost domestic fish supply, support food security, and meet the growing demand for affordable protein while ensuring responsible resource management.

Key activities include test fishing, hydro-acoustic surveys and biomass mapping in the West Philippine Sea, East Philippine Sea, and Benham Rise, conducted in compliance with Philippine laws. Data gathered from these operations will help officials understand fish stock distribution and guide future policies for the sector.

Beyond technology sharing, the project highlights the importance of innovation and data-driven approaches in developing the country’s blue economy. The pilot program will serve as a basis for scaling modern practices that support long-term productivity and sustainability for one of the nation’s critical food industries.
