Visa expands contactless payments to Manila’s LRT-2

Visa has launched automated, contactless fare collection systems across all 13 stations of the Manila Light Rail Transit Line 2 (LRT-2), marking its fourth cashless transit initiative in the country. Developed in partnership with the Department of Transportation, Rizal Commercial Banking Corporation, and other industry stakeholders, the project enables more than 160,000 daily commuters to pay for train rides using Visa cards, QR codes, and NFC-enabled devices.

This digital upgrade aims to streamline the commuting experience, boost ridership, and enhance urban mobility by replacing traditional cash transactions with secure digital payments. The initiative builds on Visa’s previous cashless transit rollouts for the MRT-3 and bus systems in Cebu, Mandaue, and Bacolod, bringing Metro Manila closer to the payment standards of other major regional urban centers. By providing open-loop, contactless systems that meet the expectations of both local commuters and international tourists, the project supports the Philippine government’s efforts to accelerate financial inclusion, increase economic productivity, and advance smart urban infrastructure.
